Liverpool confirm Philippe Coutinho’s transfer to Barcelona

Philippe Coutinho‘s transfer from Liverpool to Barcelona has been confirmed, completing a British record move for a reported £142 million.

The Brazilian attacker, who missed the first two games of January due to a rather suspicious injury – just as he did with a claimed back injury in August – flew to Spain on Saturday evening after the two clubs agreed a deal.

The fee is an initial £106 million (€120 million) with the rest in what is being reported as realistic add-ons that will be activated in the future, taking the fee to €160 million.

Coutinho joined Liverpool from Inter Milan five years ago for £8.5 million and made 201 appearances for the Reds, scoring 54 goals.

The No.10 scored 12 goals and made 9 assists in 20 appearances this season.

A statement from Liverpool FC reads:

Liverpool FC can confirm Philippe Coutinho will be leaving the club after a transfer agreement was reached with FC Barcelona, subject to medical and agreement of personal terms.

The player now has permission to complete the usual formalities to conclude the transfer immediately.

Coutinho will be unveiled as a Barcelona player this weekend and could make his debut next Wednesday.
