Having already won 3-0 in the first leg at Anfield, the Reds faced the tough task of avoiding capitulation in Manchester.

It looked set to be a long night as Gabriel Jesus stroked home after just two minutes, but Jurgen Klopp‘s side held firm for the rest of the half before opening up after the break.

With Pep Guardiola sent to the stands after remonstrating a Leroy Sane goal perhaps wrongfully ruled out before half-time, Liverpool were able to take control.

Mohamed Salah, as ever, struck first, after excellent work from Georginio Wijnaldum, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sadio Mane, scoring his 39th goal of the season.

Then Roberto Firmino‘s industry paid off to provide the No. 9 the chance to finish the game off and secure Liverpool’s third victory over City this season.

The Reds are next in action at home to Bournemouth on Saturday evening in the Premier League, but for now their attention will be on the semi-final draw on Friday.

AS Roma are already in the hat along with Klopp’s side, with two of Bayern Munich, Sevilla, Real Madrid and Juventus to join them on Wednesday night.

After their two-legged mauling of City in the quarter-finals, few would bet against Liverpool to continue to dominate in the next round.
